We Both Eat Rice, But That\u27s About It: Korean and Latino Relations in a Multi-Ethnic City

    Get PDF
On any given day, in any given restaurant in Koreatown, countless orders are taken, meals are served, tables are cleared, dishes are washed, and checks are paid. Down the street at a corner convenience store, shelves are stocked, beverages are placed into large refrigerators, and purchases are rung up. Even to the most casual observer, it becomes obvious that Korean workers take the orders and collect the money while Latino workers replenish the shelves, clear the tables, and wash the dishes

Invariant submanifolds for affine control systems

Given an affine control system x˙=f(x)+j=1mgj(x)uj\dot{\mathbf x} = f({\mathbf x}) + \sum_{j=1}^m g_j({\mathbf x}) u_j we present an algorithmic process of construction of submanifolds that are invariant under controls assuming that the linear span of f,g1,,gmf, g_1, \ldots, g_m has constant rank. We use the method of reduction of Pfaffian systems to a largest integrable subsystem and finding the first integrals and the generalized first integrals for the vector fields.Comment: 11 page

Adaptive stochastic radio access selection scheme for cellular-WLAN heterogeneous communication systems

    Get PDF
This study proposes a novel adaptive stochastic radio access selection scheme for mobile users in heterogeneous cellular-wireless local area network (WLAN) systems. In this scheme, a mobile user located in dual coverage area randomly selects WLAN with probability of ω when there is a need for downloading a chunk of data. The value of ω is optimised according to the status of both networks in terms of network load and signal quality of both cellular and WLAN networks. An analytical model based on continuous time Markov chain is proposed to optimise the value of ω and compute the performance of proposed scheme in terms of energy efficiency, throughput, and call blocking probability. Both analytical and simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared with the mainstream network selection schemes: namely, WLAN-first and load balancing

Paddy Double Cropping in Ketara Irrigation Scheme: An Analysis of Cropping Schedule

Water availability is the main criterion considered in the fixation of a planting schedule. As water plays a central role in crop establishment, and that water availability is dependent on rainfall pattern and irrigation system characteristics, the recommendation of a cropping schedule largely revolves around long term rainfall pattern. In the KETARA Irrigation Scheme, the irrigation water supply is tapped directly from the Sungai Besut river system at Besut Barrage. The town water supply is also dependent on the same water source, which lends competition to the irrigation authority in the use of water. The KET ARA authority has experienced irrigation water shortages in the scheme. To fix a cropping schedule to capitalize on direct rainfall within the irrigation command area will help to relieve the water deficient situation. In the process of recommending the best cropping schedule based on long term rainfall pattern, analysis is also carried out to ascertain the status of irrigation performance in the KETARA Irrigation Scheme. It is found that the overall irrigation efficiency of the KETARA Irrigation Scheme during the main season 1995/96 and off-season 1996 was 38.1%. Available stream flow in the Sungai Besut River System was not to be able to meet the peak water supply requirement of the scheme during the presaturation period during the off-season 1996. Contribution of direct rainfall towards total seasonal irrigation supply was in the region of 27% to 33%
